Día Mundial del Glaucoma

El Día Mundial del Glaucoma se celebra todos los años el 12 de marzo. El principal objetivo es el de llamar la atención a la población a nivel mundial de las enfermedades oculares progresivas que dañan la visión. Es un día en el que se pretende enseñar a la población la importancia del diagnóstico precoz de una enfermedades neurodegenerativas.

¿Qué es el glaucoma?

El Glaucoma es una enfermedad neurodegenerativa multifactorial caracterizada por daño en el nervio óptico y la capa de fibras nerviosas de la retina, secundarias al aumento de la presión intraocular. Esta enfermedad es irreversible y en sus comienzos no suele presentar ningún tipo de síntomas, por lo que la prevención precoz es vital para poder evitar la ceguera. Este también es conocido como ‘el ladrón sigiloso de la visión’.

En general el glaucoma no presenta síntomas aunque en las variedades menos frecuentes puede presentar:

Náuseas.
Dolor de ojos.
Visión borrosa.
Dolor de cabeza.
Pérdida de la visión.

¿Por qué debería importarme?

Porque con un diagnóstico oportuno y un tratamiento adecuado, la gran mayoría de los pacientes con glaucoma conserva su visión.

Es por ello que es muy importante prevenir la aparición del glaucoma, sobre todo en personas entre los 40 y 45 años, recomendando consultas oftalmológicas para controlar la presión ocular.

¿Cuáles son los factores de riesgo?

El glaucoma puede afectar a cualquiera, pero las personas que presentan alguno de estos factores tienen más riesgos de padecerlo:

Personas mayores de 40 años
Personas con familiares directos que padecen glaucoma
Personas que han sufrido traumatismos en los ojos
Personas que usan o usaron corticoides (en cualquier formato)
Personas que nunca asistieron al oftalmólogo
Personas a las que nunca se les tomó la presión intraocular
Personas con miopía.
Personas que tienen diabetes.

La mejor estrategia para combatir el glaucoma es mantenerse informado y asistir al oftalmólogo al menos una vez al año.

¿Qué se hace?

Se realizan diversas actividades destinadas a que la población mundial conozca de manera más amplia la enfermedad del glaucoma. Para ello se realizan diversos congresos en los que los especialistas tratarán de poner en relieve de los asistentes los avances y técnicas que se están desarrollando y llevando a cabo.

Muchos centros de salud realizan pruebas y exámenes oculares para todas aquellas personas que así lo deseen, para descartar cualquier enfermedad ocular y de esta forma animar a la población a realizarse las pruebas pertinentes y poder obtener un diagnóstico adecuado y su posible tratamiento. Cada año se pretende concienciar a la población de que el mejor tratamiento para este tipo de enfermedades es la detección temprana y precoz de la propia enfermedad.

Si bien la enfermedad es incurable, un 90% de la ceguera que provoca el glaucoma podría evitarse mediante la detección temprana y tratamiento.

¿Qué podemos hacer nosotros?

Desde nuestro lugar podemos hacer prevención y brindar información sobre esta enfermedad, aconsejando:

Consumir frutas y verduras ricas en vitamina A
Controlar la presión arterial
Realizar actividad física diaria
Evitar consumir grasas, azúcares y cafeína
Acudir al oftalmólogo una vez al año
