Día Internacional de la Eliminación de la Violencia contra la Mujer

El 25 de noviembre de 1960 fueron asesinadas las hermanas Patria, Minerva y María Teresa Mirabal, quienes se habían rebelado contra el régimen dictatorial de Rafael Trujillo en República Dominicana. En reconocimiento a la valentía de dichas mujeres y en la defensa de los Derechos Humanos, la Asamblea General de las Naciones Unidas designó esta fecha como el Día Internacional de la Eliminación de la Violencia contra las Mujeres. 

En 1993, la ONU aprobó la Declaración sobre la Eliminación de la Violencia contra la Mujer. Allí se definió esta problemática como “todo acto de violencia basado en el género que tiene como resultado posible o real un daño físico, sexual o psicológico, incluidas las amenazas, la coerción o la prohibición arbitraria de la libertad, ya sea que ocurra en la vida pública o en la vida privada”. La Asamblea reconoció además que era necesario “un compromiso de todos los Estados y de la comunidad internacional en general” para eliminar estos tipos violencia.

La violencia contra la mujer sigue siendo un obstáculo para alcanzar la igualdad, el desarrollo, la paz, al igual que el respeto de los derechos humanos de mujeres y niñas. Lo que es más, la promesa de los Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible de no dejar que nadie se quede atrás, no podrá cumplirse sin primero poner fin a la violencia contra mujeres y niñas.

Cifras importantes

A nivel mundial:

  • Una de cada tres mujeres ha sufrido violencia física o sexual, principalmente por parte de un compañero sentimental.
  • Solo el 52% de las mujeres casadas o que viven en pareja decide libremente sobre las relaciones sexuales, el uso de anticonceptivos y su salud sexual.
  • Casi 750 millones de mujeres y niñas que viven hoy en día se casaron antes de cumplir 18 años, mientras que al menos 200 millones de ellas se han visto sometidas a la mutilación genital femenina.
  • Una de cada 2 de mujeres asesinadas en 2017 fue asesinada por su compañero sentimental o un miembro de su familia. En el caso de los hombres, estas circunstancias únicamente se dieron en uno de cada 20 hombres asesinados.
  • El 71% de las víctimas de la trata en todo el mundo son mujeres y niñas, y 3 de cada 4 de ellas son utilizadas para la explotación sexual.

En Argentina:

  • Por día, aproximadamente, se denuncian 263 casos de violencia de género en diferentes organismos públicos.
  • El total de casos de violencia contra mujeres de 14 años y más informados al Indec entre 2013 y el 31 de diciembre de 2018 es de 576.360.
  • Hasta el día 20 de noviembre del corriente año, se cometieron 290 femicidios.

Actualmente, sigue existiendo una impunidad generalizada en la violencia sexual y la violación, de ahí que la temática de este Día Internacional sea “Pinta el mundo de naranja: Generación Igualdad se opone a la violación”.

Como todos los años, esta jornada de lucha del 25 de noviembre marca el lanzamiento de la Campaña Únete, que contará con 16 días de activismo que concluirán el 10 de diciembre, coincidiendo con el Día Internacional de los Derechos Humanos.

Los 16 Días de activismo contra la violencia de género es una campaña puesta en marcha por activistas en la inauguración del Women’s Global Leadership Institute en 1991 y sigue estando coordinada cada año por el Center for Women’s Global Leadership. .

Si bien los nombres, las épocas y los contextos pueden variar, la violación, la violencia sexual y el maltrato son fenómenos que afectan a mujeres y niñas de todo el mundo, en tiempos de paz o de guerra.

La violación está arraigada en un complejo conjunto de creencias, poder y control patriarcales que continúa creando un entorno social en el que la violencia sexual está generalizada y normalizada. Las cifras exactas de violaciones y agresiones sexuales son sumamente difíciles de confirmar como consecuencia de la osadía e impunidad con las que cuentan los agresores, el estigma que sufren las sobrevivientes y el silencio que sigue a la agresión.

Cuando se trivializa o queda impune se crea una cultura generalizada en la que la violencia sexual se normaliza, se infravalora a las mujeres y las niñas, y comunidades y países enteros quedan fracturados. Somos demasiadas personas las que no señalamos la cultura de la violación que nos rodea, o que no la cuestionamos. Con palabras, acciones e inacciones; con leyes discriminatorias o la tolerancia hacia los agresores; con los medios de comunicación que consumimos, los chistes de los que nos reímos y las actitudes que no discutimos, nos convertimos en parte de una cultura que favorece que la violación y la cultura de la violación continúen.

Este tipo de violencia afecta a una de cada tres mujeres; 15 millones de muchachas adolescentes de todo el mundo han sufrido el sexo forzado.
